Abstract
The exposure is shown to be an essential factor in the treatment of test anxiety, but systematized studies in the treatment of test anxiety have not been performed. The aim of this trial is to evaluate the effects of quasi-virtual reality exposure therapy on test anxiety of the students who are preparing college entrance examination. Subjects were enrolled from a private academy for college entrance examination. Seventy-four students who had high score in Test Anxiety Inventory - Korean Version were included. Four sessions of exposure treatment were performed during consecutive 4 days. The students had viewed a 5 minutes movie clip regarding the real situation of the Scholastic Aptitude Test using Head Mount Device (HMD). The students checked Visual Analog Scale (VAS) while imagining the examination at the baseline and after each session. After 4 sessions of exposure treatment, the VAS scores were significantly reduced in the subjects (t=6.09, p<0.001). The VAS scores had a trend of increment after the first session, but were subsequently reduced after the second session. The change of VAS scores between baseline and the end point were significantly greater in male students than female ones (t=2.60, p=0.011). In the present single group open study, the quasi-virtual reality exposure therapy ameliorate the test anxiety of the students preparing college entrance examination, and this treatment effect was greater in male students
